The Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency has warned of a storm surge in Hamburg, on the North Sea and in the Weser and Elbe regions.

The risk of storm tides existed until shortly after 6 p.m. on Sunday evening.

Then the apex should also be reached in Hamburg-St.-Pauli.

According to the information, however, significantly increased water levels on the German North Sea coast are to be expected even on Monday night.

Secure houses, avoid areas

The police advised that lower-lying places such as the port, HafenCity and areas near the Elbe should be avoided and bypassed extensively.

Houses should also be secured from the water there and cars should be parked in higher areas.

According to the German Weather Service (DWD), the reason for the inconsistent and windy weather in Schleswig-Holstein, Lower Saxony and Hamburg is a storm low that moves from the North Sea via southern Scandinavia to Russia.

Storm gusts between 65 and 85 km / h are expected on the coast until late Sunday evening.

North Sea storm surges of this magnitude are not uncommon at this time of year.

The first storm surge of the 2021/22 season - caused by the low storm »Ignatz« - occurred on October 21st.

Weather in Germany

The DWD predicted extremely changeable weather for Germany on Sunday: »Windy in the north with individual thunderstorms, stormy on the coast and in the ridge areas.

In the evening, the wind gradually eases. «Already in the afternoon there could be some loosening in the west, with some rain here and there between the Main and Danube, while in the southern foothills of the Alps it could still be sunny and dry.
