Reopening of borders: what are the conditions for traveling to the United States from Monday?

Travelers will need to show proof of full vaccination and a negative test at the airport. We take stock.

The United States is reopening its borders on Monday to fully immunized non-US citizen and non-immigrant travelers.

But several conditions are necessary to be able to board a plane bound for the country.

Complete vaccination

These travelers must first present proof of full vaccination, except for those under 18 and a few rare exceptions (diplomats and travelers for urgent and humanitarian reasons in particular). The Centers for Disease control, the American health authority specifies that a vaccination is considered complete 14 days after having the administration of a dose of the Janssen vaccine and the second dose of one of the other vaccines authorized by the United States.

The vaccines accepted by the country are Janssen, Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, AstraZeneca, Indian Covaxin, Covishield (manufactured by AstraZeneca in India at a lower cost) and finally the Chinese Sinopharm and Sinovac.

These are vaccines approved or authorized by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as well as those on the World Health Organization (WHO) Emergency Use List (EUL).

A negative test

Even if they present complete proof of vaccination, all travelers, except children under two years of age, must also present a negative virological test (PCR or antigen) carried out less than three days before boarding.

What are the documents to provide?

But then what should you take in your luggage to justify this vaccination at the airport?

Among the proof of vaccination, only vaccination certificates in the form of a QR code on smartphone or on paper will be authorized.

A print or digital photo of the vaccination card or certificate will not be accepted, the CDC said.

In addition, all travelers must complete, before traveling, a certificate relating to their vaccination status and the obligation to test (according to the Consulate General of France in Washington).

Watch out for those who have contracted the Covid

It seems that like the British and Canadian authorities, the United States does not recognize the "one dose plus one Covid infection" scheme as a complete vaccination scheme.

“Indeed, this scenario is not mentioned in the CDC press release.

We ask all the same for confirmation from the American embassy, ”replies Parisian Roland Lescure, LREM deputy for the French in North America.
