This morning in Paris, before the start of the International Conference on Libya, Prime Minister

Mario Draghi

met the President of the Council of Ministers of the Libyan National Unity Government,

Abdel Hamid Dabaiba

, at the Embassy of Italy in Paris. The meeting was held in the presence of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of both countries.

Around 1pm Draghi met with French President

Emmanuel Macron

at the Elysee Palace in Paris.

The premier was welcomed in the courtyard of the presidential palace by Macron himself with a hug and a handshake.

After the bilateral meeting, the two leaders of France and Italy will participate in the international summit on Libya scheduled at the Maison de la Chimie, not far from the Eiffel Tower, on the Parisian left bank.

The work of the International Conference on Libya began with a bilateral meeting between the French President, Emmanuel Macron, and the two Libyan leaders present, the President of the Presidential Council, Al Menfi, and Prime Minister Dabaiba

.

The joint press conference of France, Italy, Germany, the UN and Libya is scheduled for 6.30 pm.

THE OBJECTIVES OF THE CONFERENCE - "The goal is to make the electoral process indisputable and irreversible"

: this is the agenda of the International Conference on Libya co-chaired by French President

Emmanuel Macron

with Prime Minister

Mario Draghi

and German Chancellor

Angela Merkel

, the 3 countries at the forefront in the search for a solution to the crisis in the North African country.

The organizers aim to give a further, and hopefully decisive, impetus to the holding of elections on December 24, an appointment that the tensions and rivalries between the Libyan factions continue to make uncertain.

"The elections - explained a source from the Elysée - are close at hand. In Libya there is a strong movement in favor of their conduct. The stability of the country is at stake". Because it is a question not only of having democratic elections held but also of ensuring that the result of the polls is then respected, both as regards the presidential elections on December 24, and subsequently for the legislative elections scheduled a month later.

In the intentions of the organizing countries, the elections represent a turning point, the longed-for pacification of a country in chaos for 10 years after the fall of the regime of

Muammar Gaddafi

and his death. Torn by internal struggles between the two rival camps that share influence over the territory, Libya is represented at the Paris Conference by both the President of the Presidential Council,

Mohamed Al-Menfi

, and by the Prime Minister of the National Unity Government,

Abdelhamid Dbeibah.

. The two, in conflict, both arrived in Paris.

Vice-president

Kamala Harris

will be present for the United States

,

at the end of a 5-day visit to the French capital, while the Elysée confirmed the presence of Egyptian President

Abdel Fattah al Sisi

.

Serghei Lavrov

, the Russian foreign minister, will also be present at the conference representing Moscow which - like Cairo - supports the strong man of eastern Libya, Marshal

Khalifa Haftar.

Sedat Onal

, Deputy Foreign Minister, will represent Turkey, a choice that also seems to be the result of tensions with Paris.
