Two hunters from the city of Taibeh in the center of the country, who hunted Eretz Israel deer, an endangered animal and banned from hunting in Israel, were today (Sunday) sentenced in the Tiberias Magistrate's Court, which includes imprisonment, a fine and a suspended sentence.



According to the indictment, the two defendants, in their 30s, engaged in illegal hunting of an Israeli deer in the Gilboa area in 2016. The two, together with other partners in fact, did so while using ATVs in pursuit of a herd of deer and one of the ATVs hit the Israeli deer and ran over it. After the deer was run over, the speeding ATV returned to its point of impact and the driver and passenger buried a black sack among bushes on which weeds and fragments of branches had been placed.



Inspectors from the Nature and Parks Authority who acted in the area and noticed the acts located the black bag in the area and inside it was the body of an Israeli deer female with a slit neck while her body was still hot and blood was dripping from her body. Dehydration was in advanced stages of pregnancy.



Defendants were charged with offenses of hunting a protected wild animal without a license or permit, prohibiting hunting by prohibited methods (chasing motorized vehicles) and cruelty and animal abuse.

Judge: "Most of the danger of extinction stems from illegal hunters"

The first defendant, who had previous similar offenses, was sentenced to 20 months in prison (including probation), a fine of NIS 60,000 (including forfeiture of an obligation from a previous case in the amount of NIS 50,000) and a suspended sentence if he committed similar offenses.



The second defendant, without similar offenses, was sentenced to 6 months' imprisonment, a fine of NIS 15,000 and a suspended sentence if he committed similar offenses.



Following the sentencing of the two hunters, said Advocate Shai Peretz, the Chief Prosecutor of the Nature and Parks Authority, he said, "The sentence given today is a real expression of the clear and obligatory aggravation of harming the wildlife protected by the courts. A cruel event of this kind is important that will be met with a deterrent sanction in the form of a lengthy prison sentence! The inspectors and the prosecution of the Nature and Parks Authority will continue to be vigilant in order to fully prosecute the delinquent offenders who are harming the precious natural treasures of the State of Israel. "



According to Justice Nir Mishori Lev Tov in the sentence, "there is no disagreement today and so I learned from the many opinions submitted to me regarding the wildlife in Israel, especially the Eretz Israel deer, that the wildlife population in the State of Israel is in real danger of extinction, and that many species are already extinct In the face of the danger of extinction. "In order to prevent the loss of various varieties, some of which are typical and even unique to this area."
