Golden Globe Nominations: Kenneth Branagh and Jane Campion films are favorites

Branagh's "Belfast" and Campion's "The Violence of the Dogs" each received seven nominations at the Golden Globes. Because of a lack of diversity and unclean business, prices have fallen into disrepute.

The dramas "Belfast" and "The violence of the dogs" are among the favorites in the race for the Golden Globes, each with seven nominations.

The new edition of "West Side Story", the tragic comedy "Licorice Pizza", the satire "Don't Look Up" and the sports drama "King Richard" have several chances to win.

The nominations for the awards from the Association of Foreign Press (HFPA) in 25 film and television categories were announced on Monday. The prizes are due to be awarded on January 9th. The format of the 79th gala is still open. The small HFPA association came under heavy criticism and reform pressure this year due to a lack of diversity and lack of transparency. House broadcaster NBC, which has broadcast the gala since 1996, does not want to host a TV show in 2022. Globe contenders could stay away from the normally star-studded awards ceremony in order not to be associated with the damaged brand.

That hasn't stopped the HFPA from nominating some of Hollywood's biggest names - in both film and television.

The actors who have been nominated for a film globe include Lady Gaga ("House of Gucci"), Kristen Stewart ("Spencer"), Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem (both in "Being the Ricardos") and Denzel Washington ("Macbeth").

In the TV sector, Kate Winslet (“Mare of Easttown”), Jessica Chastain and Oscar Isaac (each “Scenes from a Marriage”) and Michael Keaton (“Dopesick”) received nominations.

In the drama series, the global hit »Squid Game« and the US media satire »Succession« compete against each other, in the comedy area »The Great« and »Hacks« were nominated for the best format and their leading actors.

The long-lived impression that non-white talents are not adequately recognized at the Globes is counteracted by a number of nominations this year.

The main actors in the field of drama / film are dominated by the Afro-American stars Will Smith, Denzel Washington and Mahershala Ali.

In the main actors drama / series, the black stars Billy Porter ("Pose") and Omar Sy ("Lupine") meet the Korean Lee Jung-Jae from "Squid Game".

Women directors are also doing better this year than in other Globes years: Jane Campion and Maggie Gyllenhaal ("The Lost Daughter") are two women in the race against Kenneth Branagh, Steven Spielberg and Denis Villeneuve ("Dune").

It remains to be seen whether these course corrections will be sufficient to bring the Globes back more prestige in 2023.

In any case, it looks mixed for German candidates: Star composer Hans Zimmer alone could win another Globe.

Born in Frankfurt, his composition for the science fiction drama “Dune” earned him his 14th nomination in the “Best Film Music” category.

He already has two Globes, 1995 for "The Lion King" and 2001 for "Gladiator".

The tragic comedy »Ich bin dein Mensch« by director Maria Schrader did not make it into the category »Best Non-English Language Film«.

Here, among others, the Iranian Asghar Farhadi, the Spaniard Pedro Almodóvar and the Japanese Ryusuke Hamagutchi compete against each other.

They are also considered favorites at the Oscars.
