In Ahnée in Belgium, the nuns of the Abbey of Maredret diversify their activity.
To be able to finance the restoration work of their abbey, they embarked on the world of Belgian beer.
“We didn't have enough income to be able to maintain the building.
We had to find an effective solution and beer met that need, ”says Sister Gertrude.
The Benedictine sisters have partnered with brewer John Martin to give birth to a new range of beers.
To design these spelled beers, the brewer was inspired by plants commonly grown in the nuns' garden.

To be able to use the name of the abbey, the brewer pays royalties to the nuns.
“We are going to produce 300,000 bottles this year and we hope to produce 3 million a year thereafter,” says Edward Martin, the group's distiller.
