The Italian authorities have assigned Augusta as a "safe harbor" to Doctors Without Borders' ship Geo Barents with 558 refugees on board, including many minors.
This was communicated by the same humanitarian organization which in recent days had called for a solution to the affair after the rescue of migrants in eight different interventions, the last of which took place on Christmas Eve.
The ship is now heading for the Sicilian port.
