A man shot four people in the US state of Colorado.
The gunman had opened fire first in Denver, then later in Lakewood, the authorities said late Monday evening (local time).
Three other people were injured, including a police officer.
The perpetrator ultimately died himself, but according to the AP news agency it was initially unclear whether it was bullets from the police.
Nothing was communicated about the attacker's motive either.
Exchange of fire when fleeing by car
According to police, the incidents began around 5 p.m. local time in the city of Denver, where two women and a man were shot dead and another man was injured.
According to the police, shots were also fired a little later during a chase with the police.
The shooter went to the neighboring Lakewood, where he shot a person and injured another.
The man was then identified and involved in an exchange of fire with the officers at another location.
"In this case, the shooter was hit" and was "pronounced dead at the scene," said the Lakewood police spokesman.
A wounded policeman is being treated in the hospital.
