alms for monkeys
On several islands outside the city of Marshall in Liberia, monkeys live with a peculiar past: In the 1970s, a virus testing laboratory operated in Liberia, in which hundreds of chimpanzees were used as laboratory animals.
The laboratory was closed during the civil war, which lasted until 2003.
The remaining monkeys were released on six islands.
However, because there is not enough food and drinking water on these islands, volunteers have been taking care of the animals ever since.
