Kyiv Mayor Vitali
Klitschko
, a former world heavyweight boxing champion, pledged on Wednesday to "defend" the Ukrainian capital if fears of a Russian invasion materialize.
“We have to be prepared for the worst-case scenario,” the 50-year-old city councilor told reporters.
"We hope it will not happen, but if aggressors come to our country, we will have no other choice, we must defend our city, our country, our future," he added.
The mayor of Kiev visited with his brother Wladimir, also a boxing champion, a recruitment center in Kiev for volunteers ready to fight if the city was attacked.

registered himself, saying he wanted to "protect" his loved ones.
Russia, which has massed tens of thousands of soldiers on its neighbor's border, is accused by the West of preparing to attack Ukraine.
In Kiev, life continues as normal, with no apparent signs of tension or preparations for a possible conflict.
The mayor assured that his administration was preparing by working in particular with the army on defense plans for the city of nearly three million inhabitants.
