While fleeing a traffic check in Efringen-Kirchen in Baden-Württemberg, a drunk driver is said to have hit a police officer with his car and seriously injured him.

The man is suspected of attempted homicide, police and prosecutors said on Tuesday.

The injured officer was taken to a hospital by rescue helicopter on Monday.

The 61-year-old was noticed by the officials on Monday evening because of his driving style.

According to the police report, he refused to stop for a general traffic check and fled.

In the area of the B3 he could be stopped by several patrol cars.

When a 39-year-old policeman then approached the vehicle for the announced check, the driver rammed the policeman head-on.

In this context, the other emergency services fired several shots, according to the police.

According to the report, the man was able to drive away again, but was finally stopped and arrested in Efringen-Kirchen.

The 61-year-old is said to be already known to the police for insult and robbery.

Due to two gunshot wounds, the man was treated on an outpatient basis after his arrest.

Last week, a 24-year-old police officer and a 29-year-old chief inspector were shot dead during a traffic check near Kusel in Rhineland-Palatinate.

The investigators suspect that the alleged perpetrators wanted to cover up poaching.
