French actor André Wilms, one of Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki's favorite cast members, died in a Paris hospital on Wednesday at the age of 74.
This was announced by his agent Sébastien Perrolat to the AFP news agency on Thursday.
His family did not name the cause of death.
Wilms, born in Strasbourg, also worked as a theater actor and director - often at German theaters.
He had a close working relationship with the playwright and director Heiner Goebbels.
Wilms gained greater notoriety through his participation in the film »Life is a Long, Calm River« by French director Étienne Chatiliez.
Known for his tragicomic style, Aki Kaurismäki cast Wilms in his 1994 films The Leningrad Cowboys Meet Moses, 1999's Juha, 2011's Le Havre and 2017's The Other Side of Hope. Wilms once said that he and Kaurismäki did not speak the same language: "The great directors don't have to talk."
