(ANSA) - ROME, FEBRUARY 10 - The water deficit, which is hitting the country, in the North is beating all negative records: even Lake Garda and Lake Iseo are decreasing, registering a filling percentage of only 13.6%, while the Major is about 76 centimeters lower than the average for the period.

This was announced by the Anbi Observatory (National Association of Consortia for the management and protection of the territory and irrigation water), recalling that the concern extends to Central-Southern Italy with Tuscany where the flow rates of the water courses are all well below normal.

Abruzzo, Calabria and Sardinia are exceptions.

"The picture that emerges from the weekly report is an alarming picture - comments Francesco Vincenzi, president of the Anbi - It is essential that the recent inclusion of environmental protection among the objectives of the Constitution is the start of a new, as urgent operational paradigm for the country ".

In the Northwest, snow is scarce in Valle d'Aosta, where significant rainfall has not been recorded for about a month with the Dora Baltea river which this week has its flow reduced from 29.7 to 19.50 cubic meters per second.

Since the beginning of the year, in Piedmont, rainfall has been 93% lower than the historical average and temperatures have, on some occasions, reached the historical maximum of the period.

The flows of the Po are more than halved compared to 2021, with first signs of damage to the habitat.

Recalling that attention is focused on the future of agricultural production and food, Massimo Gargano, general director of Anbi underlines "the consequences on ecosystems, where we are witnessing the reduction of native species, overwhelmed by the arrival of the so-called alien types, more suitable for reproduce in extreme environmental conditions ".
