This is Israel's new pop princess Israel today

2022-02-13T08:06:33.076Z

At the age of 23 Nono, or by her real name Naomi Aharoni Gal, is the new promise of Israeli pop • Just before she goes up to warm up Neta Barzilai in Hangar 11, she has a few things to say

Her first album, which will be released soon, is described by Nono as a "dream of a fever", and anyone who hears her story will agree that the last months of her life certainly sound like a product of hallucinations.

She broke into our lives last summer with "Boys" - a funny and addictive pop anthem that managed to break the boundaries of the network and got stuck in the minds of listeners.

One weekend, Naomi Aharoni Gal, a 23-year-old Tel Avivian, became an anonymous musician for the new face of pop and invited to interviews and radio stations, releasing more singles that are received with great love (including "Living the Dream"), and receiving invitations to perform with musicians she admires.

This coming Saturday evening it will be Neta Barzilai's opening show at Hangar 11 in Tel Aviv, and on March 21 it will take the stage at the Barbie Club in Tel Aviv.

"Logic is really something that is not easy to find in this story," Naomi, known as Nono, tells Israel Today, but also clarifies in the same breath that this is not an instant success.

"I did not expect it either and everything was really fast, but I invested in it insanely. I have been in the field all my life, it has been around me all the time. So people ask me 'what, did you study jazz? How is it related?'

And they are surprised by that, but I hope they hear something more established in the music as well. "

So Nono is definitely a musician who has come out of nowhere.

She studied jazz and was in a military band, she is a full-time voice and piano teacher and also an indie artist who has performed on a variety of small stages on the way up.

While there are those who are quick to declare her as a judge-type character or Dudu Farouk, she makes sure to be interviewed outside the character and make it clear that this is not a stage persona that has taken over her life.

The choice not to indulge in a character stems from the understanding that such gimmicks have a tendency to wear out quickly?

"It was really a deliberation of how I take this thing, and it was very difficult for me to answer the question at first. So I just went to my natural place, and there is nothing to do - when asked a question and interviewed - it is most pleasant, convenient and authentic for me to be interviewed as myself. "She's me too. I just could not understand how I was supposed to hold an entire interview as a character, because this is also a character I did not know was a character."

There are those who see in what you do the next step in Israeli pop.

This is a piece of weight to carry.

"It's really a very big title. I mostly feel like I did not try to aim for it or any specific place. Titles are flattering, but I do what I do with it."

Do you see yourself going in other directions later on?

Less poppy?

"I have other types of music that I write and they are in a different atmosphere. Also in terms of what I listen to it is really split. I hear Charlie XX and Caroline Polczak, but I also have love for Sophian Stevens and Elliott Smith. I do not know how things will turn out. "In the meantime. I like doing the music with Nono, that's what I do and I invest everything in it. But if I feel it's time to move on from it, then I'll not be afraid to do it at all."
