The police speak of an "inglorious anniversary": A 66-year-old was apparently in possession of a fake driver's license for decades.
The suspect was caught thanks to an attentive city official in Osnabrück, according to a police report.
Accordingly, the man wanted to have his license rewritten as a current EU driving license card.
The certificate was reportedly issued on February 15, 1982.
He sent the rag to the driver's license office in the city of Osnabrück.
The clerk noticed "inconsistencies" in the document.
When asked, the police could not say what aroused his suspicions.
Call Goeppingen
The Osnabrück employee called Göppingen, where the certificate was said to have been issued.
But the driver's license number was not known to the authorities in Baden-Württemberg.
A document examiner from the Osnabrück police checked the bill.
According to his assessment, it is a "blank forgery", meaning that the gray form is original, but the paper has never been filled out and sealed by an authority.
The owner is now being investigated for forgery and misuse of identity papers.
It is not yet clear if the man ever drove.
