A young girl was missing in the United States for a year and a half: according to information from the AP news agency, she was rediscovered during a house search in New York's Hudson Valley.

The agency relies on a statement from the local police.

Officials found the child in good health Monday night at a home in Saugerties.

The small town is about 210 kilometers east of a village called Cayuga Heights.

According to the police, the girl was reported missing there in July 2019 at the age of four.

Officials suspected at the time that it might have been kidnapped by its non-custodial parents.

Makeshift hiding place

Then came a search warrant.

The police officers combed the house in Saugerties for about an hour.

Eventually, they found the girl in a wet, makeshift hiding place under the basement stairs -- along with her noncustodial mother.

According to the police, they had removed some wooden steps when they discovered the girl's feet.

The paramedics determined that the girl was healthy.

It was then returned to his legal guardian, with whom her older sister also lived.

Her non-custodial parents and a third party have been charged with disturbance of custody and endangering the welfare of the child.
