After landslides and floods in the mountains near Rio de Janeiro, the death toll has risen to more than 100.

The city of Petrópolis was hit the hardest.

Hilda, resident

»Around eight relatives of mine were in the house.

I miss my niece and her eight year old daughter.

They haven't been found yet.

We didn't expect this tragedy.

This is the end of our town.«

In Petrópolis it had rained as much within six hours as had been expected for the whole of February, and one slope slid.

At least 80 houses were hit by the mudslide, at least 24 people were saved alive, rescue workers and residents are looking for more survivors.

Hilda, resident

»Yesterday a man was found alive in the rubble.

The fire department pulled him out today.

He was already dead by then. I can't take it anymore.

They recovered him at 9:00 a.m. today.

The fire brigade failed, it was too late.

The people organized the rescue on their own, everyone helped.

Unfortunately, the administration has failed in many ways.«

Robert Beque, Shopkeeper

»I'm here out of solidarity, to help people.

Every death is bad.

I offer my help, my bathroom, water, whatever is needed.«

Petrópolis is a popular vacation spot due to its high altitude.

A possible reason for the extent of the damage is that some houses were built illegally on slopes prone to landslides.

The exact number of buried people is not yet known.

Flavio Robert, resident

»We recovered the dog over there.

Its owner is buried under the mud.

We took the dog with us, but he keeps going back to the body.

I'm holding him here now so he can't go back."

January, February and March see repeated heavy rains in Rio and the region.

In 2011, around 900 people died in a storm disaster.
