(ANSA) - ROME, FEBRUARY 18 - New satellite images show that the floating tactical bridge that in the past 48 hours had appeared under construction in Belarus along the Pripyat, a key river less than 6-7 km from the border with Ukraine, has been removed.
CNN reports this, citing informed sources.
The construction of the bridge had been closely followed by Western intelligence, fearing that it could serve for an invasion by the tens of thousands of Russian troops currently in Belarus for joint military exercises, which are scheduled to end on Sunday.
The same satellite images by Maxar and PlanetLabs, which had highlighted its presence starting from Tuesday night, however, show that it has now been removed.
The reasons for its construction remain unknown, but experts speculate that it may have been used for military maneuvers and that the Russian and Belarusian forces have already used it to transport material and would no longer need it.
