(ANSA) - VERONA, FEBRUARY 17 - The wine market in Modern Distribution is doing well in 2021, but 2022 opens in the sign of uncertainty: the panorama emerged today during an unwebinar on the subject, organized by Veronafiere, one of the approach stages at Vinitaly, which will be held from 10 to 13 April next.

Wine in the DM closes 2021 with a -2.2% volume, negative compared to 2020 but positive compared to 2019, the pre-pandemic year.

The bubbles, on the other hand, recorded a growth of 18.1% in volume, driven by Prosecco.

In terms of value, the wine grew by 2.1% and the bubbles by 20.5%.

Overall, for a value of 3 billion euros.

Several variables could influence the trend in 2022: the increase in the prices of raw materials, energy and transport;

the lower purchasing power of consumers; the possible sharp slowdown of the pandemic.

The uncertainty about the future has already negatively affected the month of January, but compared with January 2021 which had a strong growth factor: the volume of wine decreases by 7% and bubbles by 1%.

We will have to wait for the data for the first quarter of 2022, which will be presented at Vinitaly, to get a clearer picture.

even for the price of wine on the shelves, it will probably be necessary to wait until the second half of the year.

"For wine we witnessed in 2021 - declared Virgilio Romano, Business Insight Director of Iri - a correction of the great 2020 growth, due to the pandemic emergency. For sparkling wines, the closure of 2021 represents a historic result, which becomes incredible considering the + 42% towards 2018. In 2022 the Ministerial Decree will have to face the challenge of prices and the probable return to total normality of the other sales channels ".

For Mirko Baggio, representative of Federvini and head of large-scale retail sales in Italy of Villa Sandi SpA "the challenge for the future and especially for 2022 is to be able to maintain the levels of turnover achieved and continue this growth through an indispensable repositioning for the entire wine and sparkling wine sector" .
