Did you recover from Corona but not really "get back to yourself"?

Maybe this drug will help

Two small cases offer great hope to tens of millions around the world who are estimated to suffer from persistent symptoms of fatigue, pain and lack of energy after recovery from corona.

Has the solution been under our noses all along?

Quite a few people who have fallen ill in Corona and recovered are still dealing with the consequences of contracting the virus, long-term symptoms that continue to plague recoverers and disrupt their quality of life have earned the overall name Long Covid or Long Covid.

They include fatigue, exhaustion, muscle aches, shortness of breath on exertion and more, and can be a daily nuisance for those who suffer from them, who feel that even though they have recovered they have not yet really "recovered".

Promising news in this regard came recently from the publication of a medical case report, which describes two women who suffered from a long cube and were cured of it almost completely due to taking a known drug that does not require even a prescription - antihistamines commonly used to treat allergies.

Although this is an anecdotal case, that is, individual cases that came to the attention of physicians in retrospect, and not a clinical study conducted under controlled conditions.

But it still raises an interesting possible therapeutic direction, in what is a medically relevant condition for large sections of the population at present.

"Patients tell us that what they most want is to get back to work and be able to engage in all the daily activities they performed before they fell ill. They are desperately looking for something to help them recover," said Melissa Pinto, one of the authors of the article University of California.

Could it be that the solution to the problem of tens of millions in the world is an over-the-counter allergy medicine?

The same search for something that would help recoverers suffering from Long Cubid is what led Pinto and her colleagues to look for more information, and so they learned about a case of two women who accidentally discovered after taking a common antihistamine called diphenhydramine (marketed in the US under the names Bendril or Neitol) that it helped Great for relieving their long cube symptoms.

Improvement in concentration, fatigue and pain

The first case is of a woman with lactose intolerance who accidentally ate cheese, she took the antihistamine to relieve the symptoms she experienced as a result.

The other woman took the drug because another allergy drug she was taking at the exact same time was running out for her, and she needed a replacement.

In both cases, the women found that a daily dose of the drug led to a significant improvement in their quality of life.

They were more focused, their effort threshold rose and their pain severity diminished - all symptoms that had plagued them since they had been in Corona and had recovered.

Wounds and rashes on their skin (which are also on the extensive list of symptoms associated with persistent cough) have also disappeared and healed.

One woman estimated that while taking the drug she returned to 90 percent of her full function before she became ill while the other estimated the improvement at 95 percent of her daily function before she contracted corona.

The significant improvement they have experienced provides a very possible and available therapeutic avenue that can have a significant impact on those who experience a real impairment in their quality of life due to persistent corona symptoms.

This is not yet a clinical study based, but it is certainly a source of hope.

"Currently there is no cure for ongoing Covid, just symptom management. There are a number of treatment options being considered these days, and antihistamines are one of them," Pinto said.

While it is clear that two cases are not a solid enough basis to draw general or public conclusions, Pinto believes that the possibility that there is already available and accessible drug treatment justifies a deeper examination.

"The possibility of there being an over-the-counter, accessible medicine that can alleviate the symptoms of persistent Cubid should provide hope to some 54 million people worldwide who suffer from an estimated months of recovery from coronary heart disease. The next step should be extensive and comprehensive research with many participants "The efficacy of the drug and also will find the optimal dose and duration of treatment with it, so that we can produce guiding clinical rules," Pinto concluded her article.
