Gerhard Schröder suffered a defeat in court against his ex-wife Doris Schröder-Köpf.

As a spokesman for the district court in Hanover announced on request, an application by the former chancellor was rejected.

He did not give details, it was a "non-public family court procedure".

But the content of the argument has long been public: Schröder and Schröder-Köpf are at odds over an apartment.

When they were still married, the two bought an old building in Hanover's zoo district.

In 2016, the couple separated and, after the divorce, agreed that Schröder would be allowed to use an apartment and an office in the house on a permanent basis.

Schröder lives there with his fifth wife Soyeon Schröder-Kim in a 95 square meter apartment.

The Chancellor now wants to have this permanent right of residence and use entered in the land register.

He wants to ensure that it also applies if Schröder-Köpf sells its stake - so that the buyer would also be bound by the agreement.

"It's not about a dispute about money, it's just about the question of whether I'm covered in the event that my ex-wife sells her share of the house," Schröder told the "Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung".

Schröder can appeal against the court's decision.

Dispute over a statue

There had been trouble in the house for the past year.

Ex-wife Schröder-Köpf and wife Schröder-Kim argued about a statue in the stairwell that Schröder-Köpf wanted to move.

Gerhard Schröder was married to Doris Schröder-Köpf from 1997 to April 2018.

The SPD member of the state parliament is in a relationship with Lower Saxony's Interior Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) and lives in a villa in Waldhausen that she formerly shared with Gerhard Schröder.

Especially since the escalation of the crisis in Eastern Europe, Gerhard Schröder has been under considerable pressure because of his lobbying activities.

The former chancellor is the head of the supervisory board at the Russian state energy company Rosneft.

In addition, the social democrat has leading positions in the pipeline projects Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2 - both gas pipelines under the Baltic Sea connect Russia and Germany.

The Russian energy giant Gazprom also recently announced that Schröder had been nominated for the supervisory board of the state-owned company.

As a result, members of his own party had also turned away from him.
