Joe Biden appoints Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court.
She is the first African American woman to be named among the sages.
"I am proud to announce the appointment of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court. You are one of the brightest legal minds in our country and you will be an outstanding judge."
Joe Biden tweets it.
With Jackson's appointment, the US president keeps his election promise to appoint an African-American woman and further diversify the Supreme Court, which was made up of only white men for two centuries.
Jackson, if confirmed, will be the sixth woman to sit among the sages and, while not changing the voting balance - he replaces Stephen Breyer nominated by Bill Clinton - he will bring the number of women who currently make up the Court together with Amy to four. Coney Barrett, Elena Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor.
Jackson, 51, was born in Washington and raised in Miami.
She is a graduate of Harvard and currently sits on the Washington Circuit Court of Appeals.
