Store canned tomatoes properly – do not leave leftovers in the can

Store unopened, store-bought canned tomatoes in a

cool, dark place

.

They are then best consumed within 18-24 months.

Properly stored, they can even last up to a year past their best-before date.

But what's the best way to store tomatoes when you've opened the can and haven't used all of them?

Attention, dangerous for health

After opening, oxygen gets into the can, which means that the tin in the material can be dissolved and transferred to the food.

This not only changes the unpleasant taste,

tin is also harmful to health

and can put a strain on the kidneys or the stomach in large quantities!

Even if food cans are coated on the inside with a protective coating (you can tell by a white plastic layer), there is a risk that it will be damaged with a can opener or a fork.

Therefore , like other

canned foods , you should always use up or decant canned tomatoes

.

Canned Tomatoes: Refrigerate or freeze leftovers in airtight containers

Do you want the remaining tomatoes to be used for a dish and not spoil quickly?

Then you should

store leftover canned tomatoes correctly

:

  • Do not leave an opened can in the kitchen

    for more than two hours

    .

  • Transfer leftover tomatoes from the can to an

    airtight container

    .

  • You can either put this in the

    fridge

: the tomatoes should keep there for another five to seven days.

  • Alternatively, you can simply

    freeze

the tomatoes , so they will keep for longer.

In the freezer they can be used for at least another six months.

Aside from the health reasons, storing them in a jar with a lid or plastic container also ensures that the tomatoes retain their flavor and freshness as much as possible.
