Studies show that those who have suffered a stroke are more likely to be hospitalized within two hours. • Until now, this type of center only existed at Soroka Hospital.

The Ministry of Health announced today (Monday) that it has responded to a request to operate a brain catheterization center at Barzilai Hospital in Ashkelon, and the approval will be sent to the hospital in the coming days.

According to studies, the chances of a stroke victim recovering are 3.3 times higher in those who undergo cerebral catheterization within two hours.

According to a report requested by MK Ophir Katz (Likud), who led the long struggle, from the Knesset's research and information center, there is currently only one center in the southern region, located in Soroka.

The director of Barzilai Hospital, Prof. Hezi Levy, said: "We received a happy message that the Ministry of Health has allowed us to perform cerebral catheterizations for patients who have had a stroke. Open the blockage and thus save the brain cells from injury.

"I would like to thank the Ministry of Health, and MK Ophir Katz, who since being on the Knesset Health Committee and still does, has worked hard for medicine in the periphery and helped in this regard as well.

MK Katz welcomed the move: "This is an important and exciting day, the Ministry of Health listened to my cry and that of the residents of the periphery whom I was sent to represent.

For months I have been flooding the issue with discussions, queries and inquiries to the Minister.

This is about saving lives.

I will continue to fight to reduce the gaps, and to ensure that the residents of the periphery receive proper medical service. "
