Many Germans want to help in the Ukraine crisis and take Ukrainian refugees into their homes.
But is that just possible as a tenant?
Since Russian troops attacked Ukraine on February 24, almost 150,000 people have come to Germany from Ukraine and been registered* as refugees here.
This is confirmed by current figures from the Federal Ministry of the Interior.

In principle, anyone who wants to take in refugees from Ukraine in their own home can do so.
According to a regulation of the European Union, the so-called "mass influx directive", people from Ukraine are allowed
to enter Germany without a visa

stay here for the time being
without lengthy asylum procedures .
After three months, however, they must apply for a residence permit at the responsible immigration authorities.
Ukrainian refugees are allowed to live wherever they want - be it with private individuals or in the initial reception center.

Do tenants have to get permission from the landlord?
Tenants are also allowed to take refugees into their apartments.
Without consulting the landlord, however, this is only possible temporarily:
from a period of six to eight weeks, tenants should ask the landlord for permission

Who pays for the costs of refugees from Ukraine?

no state support
for helpers from Ukraine refugees , which is why they have to pay for costs such as food or higher additional costs such as electricity and water on their own for the time being.
However, the refugees themselves receive state benefits with their residence permits, which they have to apply for after three months, if their own means are not sufficient, as well as health insurance.
There is also no state liability insurance for Ukraine refugees.
Tenants must therefore bear in mind that they are liable for any damage in the apartment caused by their guests - "regardless of how long they stay or whether they pay for the accommodation or not," according to the tenants' association on its website.
