Mars is recalling some of its ice cream products.
Varieties from summer 2021 may contain traces of the pesticide ethylene oxide.
Verden – The food manufacturer Mars is recalling some of its ice cream products.
The reason for the current recall* is that the varieties may contain traces of the pesticide ethylene oxide, as reported by the German Press Agency (dpa).
For the most part, these are products that were bought in summer 2021.
However, given the low concentration, consumption is safe, as the company based in Verden (Aller) in Lower Saxony announced on Wednesday (March 23, 2022).
However, a supplier reported traces of the substance in the ingredients locust bean gum and guar gum that were delivered to a Mars ice cream factory.
The recall was due to technical non-compliance with ethylene oxide limits.

After further tests as a result of the incident in the summer of 2021, the products are now being voluntarily recalled “to counter any possible uncertainty”.
In the meantime, the suppliers are being asked to expressly confirm that all the ingredients supplied are free of ethylene oxide, as dpa announced.
According to Mars, the brands Bounty, Twix and M&M's are affected.
In order to determine whether products are affected by the recall, the product name must be compared with the best before date (BBD).
Consumers who have bought the product can contact the consumer service at mars.de/kontakt or by telephone on 089/130 130 60 with the product data and photos of the packaging including best-before date.

According to the consumer protection centers, ethylene oxide is a pesticide and fumigant that is used to combat bacteria and fungi.
However, it can change genetic material, cause cancer and is prohibited in the production of food in Europe.
Only recently were chocolate eggs recalled by dm*.
There, it could not be ruled out that individual packs were mixed with nougat eggs.
