(ANSA) - BRUSSELS, MARCH 25 - The European Union and the United States have reached an agreement to significantly increase imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) into Europe in order to reduce dependence on Russian gas.

This was announced by Joe Biden and Ursula von der Leyen.

The new alliance established between the two sides of the Atlantic also provides for the establishment of a joint task force to identify the necessary interventions to guarantee energy security in Europe and find solutions to create political and renewable hydrogen.

Still on the energy front, the European Council today must pronounce on the measures to be taken to contain oil and gas prices and their impact on electricity bills.

A'

an agreement appears to be within reach as regards joint purchases of gas on a voluntary basis, also for the purpose of replenishing stocks in view of the next winter season.

On the other hand, the issue of uncoupling the price of electricity from that of gas is more controversial, a front on which Spain, together with other Mediterranean countries, is determined to fight and, if necessary, to veto.
