The deportation of the German imposter Anna Sorokin from the United States to Frankfurt am Main failed again at the last minute.
The US immigration authority ICE wanted to bring the 31-year-old German, who has already served a prison sentence for fraud in the US, to Germany on Thursday night in a specially rented Gulfstream jet because she no longer has a valid US visa.
However, shortly before the planned flight, the lawyers for the Russian-born woman successfully filed an emergency application against the repatriation, according to US security circles.
Sorokin, who became world famous through the Netflix series »Inventing Anna«, is currently being held in a US immigration detention center.
Sorokin had stolen tens of thousands of US dollars under the pseudonym Anna Delvey between November 2016 and August 2017 through clever lies and a self-confident appearance.
Sorokin also traveled in private planes and lived in luxury hotels for months without paying the bills.
The German imposter was sentenced to four to twelve years in prison for the fraud in 2019.
However, she was released on probation in February 2021 because of the two-year pre-trial detention.
In the USA, the 31-year-old, who went to school in Eschweiler, currently gives regular interviews about her life story.
In US security circles it was said that Sorokin apparently wanted to prevent the return to her homeland at all costs, since she would then never be able to return to the USA due to a lifelong entry ban.
Because of the lawsuit, the US authorities do not want to make any further attempts to return Sorokin to Germany for the time being.
