Abbott Infant Formula Recall: Two potential deaths related to the recall

The Abbott infant formula alert was issued due to potential contamination, one of the leading causes of recalls, with Salmonella Newport and Cronobacter sakazakii.

Although the bacteria cannot grow in powdered infant formula, they can survive for a long time and pose a potential risk to babies if not heated sufficiently.

Contamination with Cronobacter sakazakii and Salmonella

"Contamination with Cronobacter sakazakii and Salmonella can lead to serious illnesses such as diarrhea (sometimes bloody), fever, sepsis or meningitis in infants, which can cause serious neurological problems and developmental disorders and, in rare cases, be fatal," says the

Federal Office for Consumer Protection

.

Newborns under 28 days old and weakened infants are most at risk of becoming infected.

The US recall is related to consumer complaints about infections.

In all of these cases, infant formula from the manufacturer Abbott Nutrition is said to have been consumed.

All five cases required hospital treatment.

In two cases, the infection is said to have led to death.

The investigations are still ongoing.
