The lights are green and red across the sky: the Aurora Boreales. Even in Germany, the phenomenon could be seen in the past few days - but there is a guarantee at the right time for these places.

Greenland

: The entire island belonging to Denmark is a fabulous spot for the Northern Lights.

Since the ice desert in the interior of the island is inaccessible, people are most likely to stay in the southern and eastern coastal regions to see the spectacle.

The best box seats are in Kulusuk or in Ammassalik.

Iceland

: The entire island is a good place to see the Northern Lights in winter when there are only a few hours of daylight.

The Thingvellir National Park outside the capital Reykjavik is particularly popular with aurora fans.

It is best to stay for one to two weeks in the months of September to February - then the Northern Lights are almost guaranteed.

: The island group in the North Atlantic, which belongs to Denmark, enchants its visitors in the long winter nights.

The 18 islands, which lie between the British Isles, Iceland and Norway, offer ideal conditions for viewing the Northern Lights with virtually no air pollution.

Norway

: As daylight begins to fade in the northern Norwegian city of Tromsö, the Aurora Borealis steps in as a source of light.

Northern Lights activity is greatest north of the Arctic Circle, often illuminating the sky with bright shades of green for hours.

Tromso boasts the world's northernmost university, northernmost brewery and northernmost planetarium.

Sweden

: Thanks to its unique microclimate, the area around Abisko in Swedish Lapland has been scientifically proven to be the best place to experience the full intensity of the Northern Lights.

A phenomenon can be observed near the Abisko National Park on clear polar nights: the notorious »Blue Hole of Abisko« opens up over the 70-kilometre-long Lake Torneträsk, a piece of clear sky, even if the rest of the sky is overcast.

Finland

: In the far north of Finland you are well prepared for the northern lights season.

Upon arrival, guests of the Aurora Chalet in Luosto are given the "Aurora Alarma" - a beeper that sounds as soon as the northern lights appear in the sky.

The Northern Lights Research Center, which is located in the nearby town of Sodanklya, ensures that it works reliably and delivers the forecast to the hotels.

One of the pilgrimage sites is Nellim on Lake Inari, the third largest lake in Finland.

Canada

: The area around Lake Superior in Ontario (seen here), the wide tundra in the north or the deserted area around the town of Whitehorse in the Yukon Territory – spectators everywhere have a front row seat when the circus in the sky begins.

The best places to see the Northern Lights are Calgary, Ontario, Yukon Territory or Manitoba.

Alaska

: The largest and northernmost US state is one big stage for the mighty Northern Lights show.

They are available in all colors and variations.

No wonder that a true "Northern Lights travel boom" breaks out in winter.
