A dead baby was found in a public garbage can in Mönchengladbach (NRW) on Monday afternoon.
A woman discovered the lifeless baby near the Volksgarten, as the police and prosecutors announced in the evening.
The birth of the child was probably just a few hours or days ago.
The officials are hoping for information on the origin and fate of the baby from the previously unknown mother.
They are also looking for witnesses who observed something during the afternoon.
The police initially gave no further details.
