It's safe to assume that Will Smith came to this year's Oscars in a good mood.
He was nominated for Best Actor for his role in the film »King Richard«.
Together with his wife, actress Jada Pinkett Smith, he walked the red carpet and posed for photographers and fans.
The couple then took a seat in the Dolby Theater and watched the awards ceremony for around two and a half hours.
Then Chris Rock entered the stage.
The comedian was to announce the Oscar winner for Best Documentary - Long.
In doing so, he also made a joke at the expense of Jada Pinkett Smith.
"Jada, I love you," Chris Rock said.
Chris Rock said he can't wait to see her in the sequel to The Jane Files.
Background: Demi Moore starred in the 1997 original with his head shaved.
And Jada Pinkett Smith also appeared bald at the Oscars.
At the end of last year, she reported on Instagram about her illness, which caused her hair to fall out.
So the hairstyle wasn't a fashion statement, but rather a medical condition - which might explain why Chris Rock's words weren't well received.
Will Smith initially appeared to be laughing at the statement, while his wife rolled her eyes.
But then Will Smith ran onto the stage – and slapped Chris Rock in the face with a flat hand.
You could see the confusion in the audience in the hall.
Was it all rehearsed?
a joke?
Hardly, because after Smith sat back down, he yelled at Chris Rock with an angry expression on his face: "Don't put my wife's name in your damn mouth." He originally used the English word "fucking".
When Chris Rock said, "Wow, man.
It was a 'The Jane File' joke,” Smith repeated in the same clear terms.
