According to the German Weather Service, March this year is already the sunniest in almost 70 years.

The most sunshine in March so far was in 1953 with 195.2 hours of sunshine, and this record was broken at the weekend, said DWD meteorologist Andreas Friedrich on Monday in Offenbach.

The DWD has been collecting sunshine data throughout Germany since 1951.

The DWD wants to announce the exact current figures in its monthly balance sheet on Wednesday.

But according to the DWD, the spring weather is now over.

As early as Tuesday, the lows "Helmka" and "Ilona" over the extreme north-west of Russia ensure that cold air from the polar regions makes its way south to Germany, as meteorologist Felix Dietzsch said.

"That's quickly noticeable in the temperatures of the coming days." So it's going downhill until on Friday only single-digit highs are reached everywhere.

"But it's not only getting cooler, it's also getting wetter," said Dietzsch.

That was also necessary because it had been far too dry recently.

Sleet and sleet showers on the Baltic Sea

According to forecasts, Tuesday will start cloudy to heavily overcast, with some sun initially shining in the south-east.

In the afternoon, showery rain will move in from the west and south-west to the middle.

The maximum values are therefore in the north at seven to 14 and in the south at 14 to 20 degrees Celsius.

In addition, mostly weak wind will blow from different directions, in the north-east partly fresh north-west wind is expected.

On Wednesday it should be loosely cloudy in the northern half with sunny sections - especially on the coasts and in the north-west.

According to the DWD, individual sleet and sleet showers are preferred in the Baltic Sea area.

Showery precipitation is expected in the center and south, which can fall as snow in the central parts of the country, at least in the mountains.

A few thunderstorms are possible in the south.

The maximum values are expected to be four to 15 degrees from north to south.

While the risk of forest fires increased in some parts of Germany, the sunny weather had a positive impact on energy production.

Compared to the same period last year, almost 25 percent more electricity was generated from sun and wind, as reported by the Federal Association of Energy and Water Industries (BDEW) and the Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden-Württemberg (ZSW) (Read more here) .
