Bestselling author Florian Illies will come to the Pinakothek der Moderne on April 4, 2022 and give an exciting lecture: Together with Max Beckmann and Gottfried Benn, we will go back to antiquity.

There are still tickets!

It's a foretaste.

One that whets the appetite for the “Max Beckmann – Departure” exhibition in the Modern Art Collection in the Pinakothek der Moderne, which art lovers are already longing for.

From November 25, 2022 it will be on show in Munich.

And already on the evening of April 4, the house is in the right mood.

Bestselling author Florian Illies will give the lecture “Waves of the Night.

Max Beckmann and Gottfried Benn's Emigration by Sea to Antiquity".

The poetic title promises that – as always with Florian Illies – it will be anything but scientifically dry.

In his latest novel “Love in Times of Hate”, the author and journalist Florian Illies tells in a fantastic collage style about the love lives of 30 or 40 writers, artists and musicians in the 1920s and 1930s.

He jumps happily from one drama to the next, from one love nest to the other.

And interwoven with what the ladies and gentlemen did outside of the bedroom: which books, pictures, ballads were created.

Men like the poet Gottfried Benn and the painter Max, for example.

From the 1930s, both of them fled thematically to the world of antiquity.

What, Florian Illies asks himself, can her evocation of antiquity still give us today?

You can look forward to the answers.

And, of course, to the large-scale Max Beckmann show in the fall.

Great anticipation!

"Waves of the night.

Max Beckmann and Gottfried Benn's emigration by sea to antiquity”: The lecture begins on April 4, 2022 at 7 p.m. in the Ernst von Siemens Auditorium in the Pinakothek der Moderne.

Admission costs ten euros and is free for members of the Friends of the Max Beckmann Archive.
