It all started with Baudelaire, his

Artificial Paradises

(1860) where the poet says how much our human spirit maintains a close relationship with the tree.

“You

are

a tree!”

is the enigmatic title that derives from it.

In more than 80 works, paintings, manuscripts, botanical documents, drawings, engravings, photographs, sculptures and films, Les Franciscaines de Deauville offers a journey through the trees to reflect on the human condition.

From the tree with its softly faded bark to the top of the Italian Giuseppe Penone, to the black and fantastic tree,

Sleepy Hollow,

with almost evil branches, drawn in pencil by the American Robert Longo;
