A 50-year-old man was rushed to the hospital after he allegedly drank a fat solvent at the Aroma branch that was in his drinking glass.

The man went to Meir Hospital in Kfar Saba and reported that he felt distressed by swallowing and burning in his mouth after drinking a drink in the coffee shop chain.

A laboratory test revealed that the drink had a degreaser.

Dr. Kobi Metzger, a physician at Meir Medical Center, said that "the patient came conscious but with difficulty swallowing, a burning sensation from the mouth to the chest area, swelling of the lips and vomiting. "The ENT team. This is not the first time such a thing has happened.

In 2017, a similar incident occurred at the Giraffe Restaurant in Tel Aviv in which two diners and the restaurant manager were hospitalized after drinking a lemonade drink diluted in a degreaser.

The three were rushed to Ichilov Hospital in the city, when the condition of one of the diners and the restaurant manager was moderate, and the condition of the third diner was mild.

Artium Vostroilov, one of the hospitalized diners, told Walla!

Because "I can not eat solids at all, only liquids, and that too with difficulty, and mostly I drink water."

What harm can occur from drinking a degreaser?

Degrees for dissolving fats are very common, both in home kitchens and industrial kitchens.

These are substances whose main active ingredient is based on caustic potassium which is a very active, basic substance (as opposed to acid), which when swallowed and even inhaled can cause an acute reaction to burns in any tissue that comes in contact with the substance - from the lips, tongue, pharynx and digestive tract.

Inhalation of the substance can cause significant damage to the airways and lungs.

About 80 percent of the world's liposuction cases occur in children, and are usually of small amounts and therefore cause only minor damage.

Especially in adults, most cases involve accidental or intentional drinking (as a suicide attempt) in large quantities, and thus the degree of damage increases.

The damage includes burns in the pharynx and upper gastrointestinal tract, to the point of injury that causes perforation of the gastrointestinal tract and life-threatening infections.

The long-term dangers include gastrointestinal scarring that can cause swallowing disorders mainly due to esophageal strictures.

What do you do in such a case?

If you have swallowed a degreaser, at home or in a restaurant, do not try to vomit the substance after swallowing for fear of creating double damage (swallowing and vomiting) and worsening of symptoms.

It is also recommended to drink plenty of water in order to dilute the concentration of the substance and seek medical attention in a hospital as soon as possible.

The same is true with eye exposure - fast rinsing with plenty of water and going to the emergency room.

The hospital usually needs an invasive examination that involves inserting a flexible tube with a camera through the mouth in order to assess the extent and severity of the injury, and the treatment is determined according to the extent of the damage, and is mainly repair of the damage.

It is important to note that industrial materials are often more concentrated and hazardous than domestic ones.

The solution - prevention

The most important thing to do in cases of detoxification from detergents is of course prevention - be careful not to keep detergents in containers similar to containers of food, or mark them very conspicuously as toxic.

The same is true for the home kitchen - keep the detergent away from the kitchen, keep it in the cupboard out of the reach of children, and never transfer hazardous substances to soft drink bottles - it's not worth the risk of accidentally drinking from it.
