Two women and an unborn baby died in a traffic accident on federal highway 96a in Brandenburg last July.

Now, about nine months later, the alleged accident driver has been taken into custody.

With the help of the data from the vehicle computer in the accident car, the expert report gave rise to the urgent suspicion that the 23-year-old with his fast driving style "accepted the death of people with approval," said Neuruppin senior public prosecutor Andreas Pelzer.

Therefore, the 23-year-old was arrested on Wednesday before Easter.

The Märkische Oderzeitung reported about it first.

In the head-on collision in the municipality of Mühlenbecker Land, the 32-year-old driver and 28-year-old passenger were fatally injured in a car that came towards the suspected speeder.

The passenger was six months pregnant at the time, and the unborn baby could not be saved.

Two other occupants of the car, aged 31 and 33, survived the accident with serious injuries.

The charge against the 23-year-old is now two counts of murder, four counts of attempted murder and two counts of dangerous bodily harm, the chief prosecutor said.

Investigations against passengers

According to the results of the investigation, the suspect accelerated his 510 hp car to the maximum on the federal highway, said Pelzer.

First, an oncoming vehicle was slightly touched by the accident driver.

The two occupants were unharmed.

The 23-year-old then got into the oncoming lane in a right-hand bend.

His car collided head-on with the second car.

The 23-year-old and his then 31-year-old passenger apparently tried to flee after the accident, but were caught by the police after about 800 meters.

In the case of the alleged accident driver, alcohol consumption "in the area of unfitness to drive" was found, said Pelzer.

Investigations into the 31-year-old passenger are ongoing.
