Customs officials seized a fried cane rat during a baggage check at Munich Airport.
"We see again and again that travelers do not want to bring food from abroad that is not suitable for import," said Thomas Meister from the main customs office in Munich: "But such a seizure is something extraordinary."
According to the information, the emergency services found the rodent during a check in the luggage of a traveler from Africa.
Protection against animal diseases
The flight passenger brought the cane rat with him as provisions.
However, the meat may not be brought into the country because of the protection against animal diseases.
It was secured and professionally removed.
Despite their name, cane rats are not related to rats, but belong to the porcupine relatives.
The rather lumbering animals are found in sub-Saharan Africa.
They feed mainly on savannah grasses and reeds.
