(ANSA) - GENOA, APRIL 23 - "It is a great honor to receive the honorary citizenship of the city of Genoa, because the story of my ancestors began here".

Alberto II diMonaco said this after the mayor Marco Bucci conferred on him the honorary citizenship of Genoa during the ceremony on the occasion of the feast of the Flag of San Giorgio at Palazzo Ducale.

"It all began here - said Albert of Monaco -, although the fortress of Monaco has progressively emancipated itself from the government of Genoa, of which in the 13th century it was a stronghold on the western border and affirmed its independence and sovereignty towards the Superba, have never broken. My ancestors have long maintained economic and cultural relations with their cousins from Genoa,

"We are here with Prince Alberto, our neighbor, with whom we work to make the Ligurian West grow - said the Ligurian governor Toti - The flag of Genoa is something bigger than us, it means going back many centuries and remembering history of many men, both the illustrious ones who left a mark and the less famous ones who, in any case, contributed to making Genoa what it is ".

This year "the Flag Festival is intertwined with two very special events: Euroflora and the awarding of honorary citizenship to Prince Alberto - Bucci underlines - Two important moments for our city, occasions for promotion and pride. The Festival of the Flag must be just that: to reaffirm our sense of belonging and our love for Genoa ".
