Hepatitis: WHO, transplants for 17 children, 1 deceased

Seventeen children (about 10%) of 169 children with acute hepatitis of unknown origin in 12 countries around the world underwent liver transplantation and at least one death was reported.

It is the first balance sheet as of April 21st that the WHO has drawn up in an update on the situation.

The registered cases are aged between 1 month and 16 years. 

"It is still unclear whether there has been an increase in hepatitis cases or an increase in awareness of hepatitis cases occurring at the expected rate but not being detected. Adenovirus is a possible hypothesis and investigations are ongoing to the causative agent ".

The WHO writes in an update on the cases that affected 169 children as of April 21st.

Both in Gb and in the Netherlands there was a significant increase in the circulation of adenovirus and tests had revealed in 74 cases while in 19 a Covid infection plus adenovirus was found.
