Charlotte Salomon (1917-1943) wrote the book "? Life? Or Theater", an autobiographical collection of paintings that have been exhibited around the world, including at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, the Boston Museum of Art and the Ontario Art Gallery.

The book is considered by many to be the first graphic novel.

Her book has been very inspiring over the years and included a full-length film in 1981, a documentary in 2011, an opera in 2014, an award-winning novel in 2014 and an award-winning ballet in 2015. It also underwent a number of adaptations for plays.
