(ANSA) - TEL AVIV, APRIL 28 - At 10 o'clock (9 o'clock in Italy) Israel stopped, as every year, at the sound of the sirens in memory of the 6 million Jews exterminated by the Nazis and their accomplices.

Wherever they were, the Israelis stopped their activities: silently they rose to their feet bowing their heads in respect of the Memory celebrated during 'Yom ha-Shoah', one of the most solemn days of pain and mourning in the national calendar.

Along the city streets or the main roads of the country, cars traveling, buses pulled over and passengers alighted, remaining silent and at attention.

Since yesterday, serabars and restaurants have closed and radio and TV broadcast mostly documentaries related to the Holocaust.

The memory began in Yad Vashem, the Museum of Memory in Jerusalem, with an official ceremony in which six survivors lit as many torches in memory of the 6 million Jews killed.

On that occasion, Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said that "the Shoah has no precedent in human history and that even the worst wars of today are not the Holocaust and are not comparable to it".

The ceremonies will continue today at both Yad Vashem and the Knesset.
