To cope with inflation but also to get out of the exceptional regime established during the Covid epidemic, the start of May will be marked by changes in regulations.

The transition to the month of May is accompanied by changes, in particular concerning salaries, and an increase in certain allowances.

These come in response to the increase in inflation, assessed at 4.5% in March by INSEE.

Le Figaro

gives an overview of the various increases, but also of the changes that will take place on May 1.

Automatic increase in minimum wage

The Smic will benefit from an automatic increase of 2.65% at the beginning of the month.

A provision provided for by the Labor Code when the consumer price index increases by more than 2% compared to its level at the time of the establishment of the last amount of the minimum wage.

However, INSEE, which publishes this index, noted an increase in consumer prices of 2.65% in March compared to the period in which the last amount of the minimum wage was established.

This increase corresponds to an increase of 33 euros net per month.

The Smic will thus reach 1645.58 euros gross monthly (1302.64 euros net) for 35 hours of work per week.

The gross hourly minimum wage will drop from 10.57 to 10.85 euros.

In Mayotte, where the minimum wage is different due to the institutional status of the island, the gross hourly minimum wage is increased from 7.98 to 8.19 euros, i.e. a gross monthly amount of 1242.15 euros.

Similarly, the minimum salary index for public officials will be raised to the level of the minimum wage in order to prevent the remuneration of certain civil servants from falling below the level of the minimum wage.

From May 1, the minimum salary in the public service will therefore increase from 1,607.31 to 1,649.48 euros gross per month for a full-time employee.

Following the increase in the Smic, the minimum remuneration of people on professional contracts and work-study trainees will also increase by 2.65% on May 1st.

Increase in social benefits

Benefits paid by the Family Allowance Funds (Caf) will also be increased by 1.8% on May 1.

This increase will therefore concern the active solidarity income (RSA), family allowances, the basic allowance for young children, the shared child education allowance (PreParE), the back-to-school allowance, the mode of care, the activity bonus.

In addition, the increase in the Disabled Adult Allowance (AAH) from 903.60 to 919.86 euros, decided in April, will be effective from the payment in early May.

Tobacco Price Changes

French Customs has also updated retail tobacco prices for May.

As of May 1, prices for some packages will fluctuate.

Many packages will see their price drop by 10 cents, such as those from the Rothmans and Vogue brands.

Other packages will see their price increase, such as those of the Winston brand, which will be 10 cents more expensive.

The exhaustive list of price changes can be consulted on the nomenclature of French Customs.

End of certain exceptional measures for the fight against Covid-19 in companies

The beginning of May will also mark the end of certain derogatory measures put in place in companies to facilitate the fight against the Covid-19 epidemic.

The law strengthening the tools for managing the health crisis, adopted last January, offered the possibility of postponing certain medical visits to occupational health services in order to allow these services to mobilize in the vaccination campaign against the virus.

Thus, it was possible in companies to postpone to a later date the periodic information and prevention visit (VIP) as well as the periodic medical fitness examination.

From May 1, this exceptional regime will end and the occupational health services will no longer be able to postpone mandatory visits.

Similarly, in order to facilitate social distancing between employees during the epidemic, the Ministry of Labor had authorized companies to open additional catering locations, even if these locations did not have all the regulatory equipment and devices.

This exceptional business regime will also end on May 1.
