(ANSA) - BEIRUT, APRIL 28 - The United Nations special envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, announced in the last few hours that he had sent invitations to representatives of the Syrian government and opposition in exile for the eighth round of talks scheduled between the end of May and the beginning of June, with the aim of continuing the negotiations for the revision of the constitution of the tormented Arab country.

Pedersen, who addressed the UN Security Council, did not rule out that a possible agreement between the parties could contribute to a political solution to the armed conflict, which has been underway since 2011.

The previous round of talks ended at the end of March with yet another stalemate.

The government and opposition delegations had taken their time asking to review the various texts presented in order to continue discussions.

Pedersen's deputy, Khawla Matar from Bahrain, went to Damascus in recent weeks, to meet with government officials, and to Istanbul, to meet with representatives of the opposition in exile, to prepare for the 8th round scheduled between 28 May and 3 June next in Geneva.
