The government has presented an emergency plan in the face of the particularly long delay in renewing identity papers.

This is a measure that could prove useful for many students.

On leaving the Council of Ministers on Wednesday, government spokesman Gabriel Attal announced that identity cards and passports "expired less than five years ago" would be "valid for the May and June exams" as well as "for registration for driving licenses in driving schools".

This provision is part of the emergency plan presented this Wednesday by Gérald Darmanin and Marlène Schiappa in the face of very long delays in renewing identity papers.

Devices to better collect requests

Among the other measures, Gabriel Attal announced that the government was working "on a common platform for making appointments at the town hall".

In addition, he assured that “400 new devices for collecting title applications” would be set up in the municipalities within a month in order to be able to process “50,000 additional applications” each week.

“The main challenge is to increase the number of appointments”, argued the government spokesperson, adding that professional requests would be “prioritized” in particular thanks to the online pre-request.

In order to also speed up requests in the prefecture, 160 agents have been recruited since the beginning of the year, ie "a 30% increase in the workforce", continued Gabriel Attal.

At present, it takes an average of 65 days to renew an identity card or passport, compared to 27 days in January and only 12 days last year.

According to Gabriel Attal, this unusual expectation is linked to "an unprecedented increase in requests" post-health crisis.
