Corona is probably transmitted more easily in people with compatible blood groups.

This is shown by the results of a study from France.

Nantes – The influence of the blood group on an infection with the coronavirus has recently been known.

A research team led by Rachida Boukhari and Adrien Breiman from the University of Nantes has now gained further new insights into this connection in their current study.

According to this, people with compatible blood groups should be more likely to infect each other.

Corona: High risk of infection in people with compatible blood groups

According to a French study, people infected with corona are more likely to infect their partners in the same household if both have compatible blood types.

The blood group not only influences the course of the corona virus, but also apparently plays an important role in the transmission of the virus.

The results of the French study, published in the journal Frontiers in Microbiology, show that a person infected with corona is more likely to infect another person in the same household if their blood types are compatible.

For their study, between January 2020 and May 2021, the scientists interviewed hospital staff infected with Corona and their partners living in the same household and recorded the blood groups of the participants during the examination.

In 333 couples, the team led by Boukhari and Breiman determined that the virus was passed on depending on the blood group.

The risk of infection was therefore higher than with blood groups that were not compatible.

Corona: Higher risk of infection with compatible blood groups

In 47.2 percent of cases, there was an infection if the blood groups were compatible with each other.

This was the case, for example, if the first infected had blood group 0 and the recipient had blood group A, B or AB.

On the other hand, transmission only occurred in 27.9 percent if the infected person had a blood group that the partner did not tolerate when donating blood.

Other studies have already researched that a person with blood group 0 has the lowest risk of becoming infected with the coronavirus.

This was also confirmed by the French study.

It is true that people with this blood group receive the virus less frequently because their blood group is only compatible with their own.

In return, they pass the virus on to other people particularly easily.

People with blood group 0 have more protection against corona infection than people with blood groups A and B

According to the scientists, people with blood group 0 are better protected against corona than blood groups A and B because the protection is based on the abundance of antibodies directed against the A and B antigens.

"Because blood group A is more common than blood groups B and AB, people with blood group A are less likely to encounter incompatible infected people in a population of Western European origin," the study says.
