(ANSA) - ROME, MAY 07 - North Korea today tested a short-range ballistic missile launched from a submarine (Slbm) in the waters off its eastern coast: this is the most supported hypothesis by the Seoul military on a move decided by Pyongyang three days after the inauguration ceremony of South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and a few hours after the alarm from the US State Department, according to which the North could be ready for a nuclear detonation already this month.

The Northern show of strength also came as US President Joe Biden is preparing to visit South Coreadel and Japan from May 20 to 24, on his first trip to Asia since he took office in the White House.

The apparent Slbm was launched near the port city of Sinpo, around 14:07 (7:07 in Italy),

according to a note from the Joint Chiefs of State Command of South Korea, on the basis of modalities also accredited by the Japanese Defense Minister NobuoKishi.

The ballistic carrier flew around 600 kilometers at an altitude of around 60 kilometers, most likely ending up outside Japan's exclusive economic zone.

The hermit state has sought to promote the development of a LGBM capable of carrying a nuclear warhead and improving its submarine launch capability to make detection even more difficult.

Pyongyang has not carried out nuclear tests since September 2017, after pledging to enter into negotiations with the United States under former President Donald Trump.

But leader Kim Jong-un has already hinted several times that the

This commitment is no longer valid and resumed in March with intercontinental ballistic missile tests, breaking another promise with the former US administration, while global attention was focused on the war in Ukraine.

In the April 25 military parade in Pyongyang, Kim said his country would intensify the development of nuclear weapons by suggesting that they could be used not only as a deterrence, but also in a preemptive strike if his fundamental interests were threatened (ANSA).
