According to rumors on Twitter, Square Enix is ​​facing a drastic change.

Tokyo, Japan – Square Enix recently sold some development studios and games to the Swedish Embracer Group.

Now the rumor came up on Twitter that Square Enix itself could be facing a possible takeover.

Shortly after Square Enix announced the sale of some development studios to the Embracer Group, there was a discussion on Twitter as to whether the Japanese company itself was about to be taken over.

Writer and game designer Jeff Grubb tweeted about a possible sale of Square Enix.

Grubb has been sharing his insider knowledge for years, for example on the PS5, via Twitter and his own YouTube channel.

He is one of a few who have acquired a certain expert status.

After the Japanese game developer had sold some development studios, Grubb wrote that Square Enix was now leaner.

When a Twitter user asked if Square Enix just wanted to get rid of ballast by selling a few studios before selling them themselves, Jeff Grubb responded with a GIF.

It read "Perhaps I've said too much..." meaning "maybe I've said too much".

Derek Strickland, senior gaming editor at TweakTown, also commented on a possible takeover on Twitter.

Strickland questioned whether Square Enix was getting ready for a takeover by another Japanese game company, or if they just want to sell excess brands to streamline their business model by getting rid of potential risk factors.

So it could be that after Microsoft's takeover of Activision Blizzard and Sony's takeover of Bungie, a new big deal could be in the offing.

In order to downsize, Square Enix has already sold developer studios Crystal Dynamics, Eidos Montreal, and Square Enix Montreal, as well as some gaming brands like Tomb Raider and Deus Ex.

All this was bought by the Swedish Embracer Group for 300 million US dollars.

A price that some observers considered too low.

Despite the sale of studios like Crystal Dynamics and game brands like Thief, Square Enix has the next big game in the wings.

Final Fantasy 16 is said to be in the final stages of development.
