What are sales exactly?

The sales are national promotional periods, which are held twice a year.

Framed by strict legislation, this event which lasts four weeks is subject to specific rules.

The dates of the sales are notably regulated.

Each year, the winter sales thus begin on the second Wednesday of January, if it occurs before the 12th of the month.

Otherwise their launch is postponed to the first Wednesday of the month.

In the same way, the summer sales take place on the last Wednesday of the month of June if it takes place before the date of the 28th, or on the penultimate Wednesday of the month in the opposite case.

The items affected by the price reductions must only be goods offered for sale and paid for more than 30 days.

Throughout the sales period, merchants are not allowed to restock.

Different offers may therefore stop before the end of the sales date, due to stock shortages.

Online and on the shelf, promotions must be clearly visible to customers.

The old price must appear alongside the discounted price.

Sellers are also required to clearly differentiate sale items from non-promotional products.

If sales are a great opportunity to save money, it is also because they are the only opportunity for merchants to make sales at a loss.

Indeed, outside sales dates, this practice of selling an item without making a profit is strictly prohibited.

Of course, brands are free to offer price reductions throughout the year independently.

However, they are not allowed to use the term “sales”.

These promotions are therefore often presented under the name of “private sales”, “destocking”, or even “flash sales”…

All about the different markdowns

The sales last for four weeks, which are divided into different periods called markdowns.

The promotions offered are thus supposed to be more and more advantageous over time.

If the date of the sales is determined by law, the markdowns depend entirely on the brands.

Many stores therefore choose to move from one markdown to another each Wednesday, depending on the stocks they have.

For these 2022 summer sales, you can therefore watch for a 2nd markdown around June 29, a 3rd markdown on July 6 and a 4th markdown on July 13.

Be careful though, some online and physical stores prefer to wait before lowering their prices or only offering three markdowns.

If you particularly like an item,

do not hesitate to buy it immediately so as not to find yourself faced with a shortage of stock.

Indeed, it is not uncommon for certain colors or certain sizes, the most common, to become unavailable before the next markdown.

When are the summer sales abroad?

The dates of the 2022 summer sales also differ overseas.

Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon will be the first territory to launch its sales from Wednesday July 20 to Tuesday August 9, 2022. You will then have to wait until Saturday September 3, the opening date of the sales in Reunion.

In Guadeloupe, the promotions will start on Saturday September 24.

In Guyana and Martinique, the summer sales will be held from Thursday October 6 to Wednesday November 2.

Saint-Barthélemy and Saint-Martin will continue from Saturday October 8 to Friday November 4, 2022.

Do you want to take advantage of the sales throughout Europe?

Abroad, summer sales usually start in July.

Only Poland is also launching its offers from June.

From July 1 to 31, you can go to Belgium for shopping at low prices.

In Spain, the sales also start at the very beginning of July, but they can extend until the end of September, depending on the province.
