»People from the community came to help.

They dug to look for victims.

Then there was a second collapse.

My neighbor's whole house collapsed.

The whole family died.

The father, the two children and the wife - all of them."

A mudslide killed 19 people in the municipality of Jardim Monteverde alone - other possible victims are also missing here.

More than a thousand people had to evacuate their homes because of the landslides and flooding across the state of Pernambuco.

»My wife and I were in the kitchen and were rescued because only the lower parts of our bodies were buried.

My daughter was in the room and was completely buried.

I have lost everything but most of all my daughter who is still under the mud and rubble.

I spoke to the emergency services and showed them where it is, but access is difficult."

In some regions, rainfall between Friday evening and Saturday morning was 70 percent of what it normally falls for the whole of May.

Around 1,200 rescue workers used a break in the rain on Sunday afternoon and resumed the search for missing and stranded victims with helicopters and boats.

Ronaldo Bento, Government Spokesman

"The Department of Citizenship is establishing a national protection and civil defense system by providing assistance and temporary housing to all families who are homeless or displaced."

Climate change and a lack of urban planning are considered factors that have led to several severe floods in Brazil in recent months, with many deaths.

The Pernambuco disaster is the fourth major flooding in five months after the country struggled with a severe drought for much of 2021.

And for the next few days, further heavy rain is predicted for the already affected areas in north-eastern Brazil.
